The India-Sikkim Peace Treaty was signed on December 5, 1950
Seventy-five years ago today, on December 5, 1950 (October 26, 1950 in the lunar calendar), the India-Sikkim Peace Treaty was signed. On December 5, 1950, the India-Sikkim Peace Treaty was signed. Sikkim is a small country at the southern foot of the Himalayas, with an area of only 7,298 square kilometers and a population of about 320,000. Its economy is dominated by agriculture and its industry is underdeveloped. The Kingdom of Sikkim was founded in the 17th century. In 1887, the British army seized Sikkim. In 1890, Sikkim officially became a British "protectorate". After British imperialism withdrew from South Asia, Sikkim failed to gain independence. In 1947, India and Sikkim signed the Status Quo Agreement. In June 1949, the Indian government sent troops to Sikkim. On December 5, 1950, India and Sikkim signed the India-Sikkim Peace Treaty. The treaty consists of 13 articles. The main contents are: Sikkim is India's protectorate and enjoys autonomy in internal affairs; The Indian government is responsible for the defense and territorial integrity of Sikkim. India has the right to station troops in Sikkim. The Sikkim government shall not import any weapons and military materials without the prior consent of the Indian government; Sikkim's foreign relations are handled and regulated by the Indian government, and the Sikkim government is not allowed to communicate with any foreign country. In August 1968, anti-India demonstrations took place in Gangtok, demanding the abolition of the India-Tin Treaty. The 12th king of Sikkim, Palden Dundup Namgar, proposed that Sikkim should be Sikkim and demanded that the 1950 India-Tin Treaty be amended. In April 1973, Indian troops marched into Gangtok and took over all powers of the Sikkim government. On May 8th of the same year, the Indian government signed the Sikkim Agreement with Sikkim, stipulating that the Indian government is not only "fully responsible" for Sikkim's national defense and foreign affairs, but also "responsible" for Sikkim's internal affairs and economy. The agreement weakened the power of the king and completely controlled Sikkim's domestic and foreign affairs in the hands of India. On May 11th, 1974, the Sikkim Parliament passed a resolution "asking" India to send consultants to formulate a constitution for Sikkim. On September 4th and 7th of the same year, the two houses of the Indian Parliament successively passed the "Amendment to the Indian Constitution", stipulating that Sikkim is the "associate state" of India, with a seat for Sikkim in each house. On April 9, 1975, the Indian Army dissolved the court guard of the King of Sikkim and the King was placed under house arrest. On April 10th, the Sikkim Parliament passed a resolution to depose the king and turn Sikkim into a state of India. On April 14th, Sikkim held another "referendum" for this purpose. The Indian parliament also passed a resolution to turn Sikkim into a state of India. Comments on the map of Sikkim before it was annexed: India, which soon became independent, inherited the mantle of Britain and promoted hegemonism
