Amadeo I
On May 30, 1845, King Amadeo I of Spain was born.
Amedeo was born on 30 May 1845 in Turin, Italy, and Vittorio Emanuele II was the second child of Princess Maria Adelaide of Austria. Amedeo was married on 30 May 1867 to the Italian princess Maria Vittoria del Pozzo, Pss della Cisterna, and had three children: Emmanuel Felipe (born in 1869, second Duke of Austin), Vittorio Emanuele (born in 1870, Count of Turin), and Louis (born in 1873, Duke of Arbuze).
In 1868, a coup in Spain, General Juan Prim overthrew the unpopular Queen Isabella II, Juan Prim and Francisco Serrano y Dominguez, and Juan Bautista Topete formed a three-person coalition government and convened a constitutional assembly in 1869. The Constitutional Assembly retained the monarchy of Spain, and Serrano was appointed regent. Their task was to select a king for Spain. They first selected the Prince Leopold of the family of Hohenzollern, a proposal that was heavily opposed by France and became the spark of the Pope Law War. On November 16, 1870, they selected the second prince of the newly-established Italian kingdom, the Duke of Austin Amedeo, as king. But in the lower part of December, Humberto Primo was attacked.
Amadeo came to Spain on December 30, 1870. The first thing he came to Spain was the funeral of Prime, who was murdered. Amadeo I was sworn in as King of Spain and West Indies on January 2, 1870. In 1873, the appointment of a new Secretary of State of the War led to the mass resignation of artillery officers. The government decided to move other officers to replace them, and asked King Amadeo I to impose sanctions. Amadeo I abdicated immediately after signing a decree against the artillery regiment on 11 February. After learning of the king's abdication, the parliament overwhelmingly approved the declaration of a republic. Amadeo I left Madrid amid the sound of firecrackers, returned to Italy with ease, and became Amedeo, Duke of Aosta again.
His wife died on November 8, 1876. On September 11, 1888, he married Maria Letizia of the Bonaparte family and had a son, Beto.
