University of Leipzig established.
The University of Leipzig, located in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany, was founded in 1409 and is one of the oldest universities in Europe and the second oldest university in the German jurisdiction today, after the University of Heidelberg (1386), the two universities that had been established before the University of Leipzig, the University of Cologne (1388–1798 and rebuilt in 1919) and the University of Elford (1392–1816 and rebuilt in 1994), both closed and reopened. Since its establishment, it has experienced nearly 600 years of uninterrupted teaching and scientific research. Now the University of Leipzig has grown to 14 departments and more than 150 research institutes, with 29,668 registered students (winter semester 2006). It is the largest university in Leipzig and the second largest university in Saxony. Famous alumni include Leibniz, Goethe, Nietzsche, historian Rank, Jean Paul, etc. In 1879, when German physiologist Wilhelm Wundt was a professor of philosophy at Leipzig University, he established the first psychological laboratory, which marked the beginning of modern psychology. The medical specialty is the most well-known specialty at the University of Leipzig.
