Today, 45 years ago, on 29 January 1980 (Lunar Calendar 12 December 1979), U.S. diplomats fled Iran. Since Iran seized the U.S. Embassy three months ago, on 29 January 1980, six Americans have been hiding in Tehran, disguised as Canadian diplomats fleeing Iran. The arrival of these six embassy personnel has been strictly classified. Since they escaped from the back door when the embassy was seized, they have sought asylum in the Canadian embassy. The Canadian government has arranged for them to escape Iran and give them diplomatic passports, while the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has forged Iranian visas.
