On the same day as 73 years ago, on March 8, 1952 (February 13, 1952), man first successfully used a mechanical heart. On March 8, 1952, the officials of the Pennsylvania Hospital announced in Virginia that today man first successfully installed a mechanical heart on a patient. Though the 41-year-old steel worker from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Peter Dylan died. But the device was successful and his death was not related to the use of a mechanical heart. During the operation, a mechanical heart was used to correct the condition of blocking the flow of blood from the heart of a patient. This mechanical heartined Dylan's life for 80 minutes, during which time doctors tried to find out whether a tumor-shaped blood clot was caused by blocking.
