According to the Ukrainian newspaper Kiev Post, Ukraine will restrict diesel imports from India from October 1 this year, and all cargo ships arriving in the port will have to undergo sampling and laboratory testing to determine whether they use Russian crude oil refining.
According to the report, the Ukrainian Security Agency (SBU) informed the Ukrainian energy customs department on September 15. Ukraine restricted the import of diesel produced by Indian factories on the grounds that it could contain Russian crude oil components.
According to data from Ukrainian energy consultancy Enkorr, India supplied 11.9 million tons of diesel in August this year, accounting for 18% of total imports from Ukraine, while India is one of the largest buyers of Russian crude oil. According to the New India Express citing data from the Indian Ministry of Commerce, the share of Russian crude oil in total India imports in 2024 has risen from about 2% before 2022 to 36%.
According to the report, Ukraine imposed similar restrictions on diesel from Turkey in September 2023, when several Turkish ports that processed Russian crude oil were listed by Ukraine as “high-risk” and all cargo ships departing from these ports had to undergo additional inspections, including laboratory testing.
