Today, 41 years ago, on January 24, 1984 (December 22, 1983) the United States approved the development of the first permanent manned space station program. On January 24, 1984, President Reagan issued a State Statement approving NASA’s permanent manned space station program within 10 years. NASA’s planned space station cost between $7.5 billion and $9 billion if it started in 1984 and could be launched in 1991. It was estimated that it would cost $19.9 billion by 2000, and Reagan had decided to allocate $1.5 billion in 1985. The space was planned to be on a 480-kilometre-high Earth orbit, each rotated by 6 to 8 men and women.
