Today, 28 years ago, on June 8, 1997 (Calendar, May 4, 1997), the U.S. published a report on the investigation of church fires. A report published on June 8, 1997 by the U.S. National Working Group on church fires showed that 162 black churches were burned across the U.S. from January 1995 to the end of May 1998; many incidents of burning black churches were made by whites. The report said that there were a total of 429 church fires in the U.S. during this period; 199 suspects suspected of 150 fires had been arrested, including 160 whites; and 94 of the 110 suspects convicted were whites. The report concluded that black churches were not the main target of fires. There is not enough evidence to indicate that burning black churches was a national “cognitive” activity
