Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Human chain fundraiser held in the United States on May 25, 1986
Thirty-nine years ago today, on May 25th, 1986 (April 17th, 1986 in the lunar calendar), the United States held a human chain fund-raising activity. The United States claims to be the strongest and richest country in the contemporary world, but the poverty problem in American society has existed for a long time, and the disparity between the rich and the poor is becoming increasingly serious. The number of Americans living below the poverty line has increased from 23 million to 34 million since 1973, accounting for about 15% of the total population. On May 25th, 1986, just as many countries in the world were raising money to save African victims, the American masses organized a massive "human chain" fund-raising activity. On May 25th, at 3pm EST and 12pm EST, nearly 7 million Americans sang songs such as "Hand in Hand Across America" and "The World Belongs to Us" in 15 minutes, arm in arm, and formed a 6,700-kilometer human chain from new york on the Atlantic Ocean in the east to Long Beach near Los Angeles on the Pacific Ocean in the west. This action was initiated by the "Artists United for Africa" Foundation, and each participant donated at least $10 to help millions of hungry and homeless people in the United States. President Reagan, his wife and daughter attended this national fundraiser in front of the White House. But Jackson, the black American civil rights leader, did not recognize Reagan as a member of this human chain, because it was his economic policies that caused the sharp increase of the poor and homeless in the United States.
