Soviet football players died for national honor on June 22, 1942
Today, 83 years ago, on 22 June 1942 (Lunar Calendar 9 May 1942), Soviet football players sacrificed for national honor. A year after the start of the Soviet War, on 22 June 1942, the German occupation forces in Kiev invited the local Dinamo football team of Kiev to play a football match. Kiev athletes knew that the victory of the match had no good outcome for them. They fought stubbornly under the inspiration of patriotism and eventually won with a 5:4 win. The German team failed. The German fascists killed five members of the Kiev team after the end of the match. In commemoration of the patriot heroes on these fields, in 1971, the Soviet sculptors built a monument for them in Kiev, sculpting the scenery of the indomitable English athletes under the ball.
