On June 7, 2006 (May 12, 2006 in the lunar calendar), Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, died. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was born on October 30, 1966, to a Palestinian family in Zarqa, Jordan. In recent years, he has been directly involved in planning a series of terrorist attacks, and gradually became the No.3 figure of Al Qaeda, known as a "terrorist strategist". In the late 1980s, young Zarqawi had entered Afghanistan as a volunteer to fight the Soviet invasion with locals. In the early 1990s, Zarqawi returned to Jordan and was imprisoned for five years for conspiring to subvert the Jordanian royal family. In 1997, after his release, he went to Europe. In 1999, he was charged by the Jordanian government for allegedly attacking Americans and Israelis, and sentenced to death in absentia by a Jordanian court. In 2000, Zarqawi returned to Afghanistan, where he established his own network of terrorist organizations and began training terrorists. According to U.S. intelligence agencies, Zarqawi suffered a leg injury in the Afghan war, then fled to northern Iraq and underwent amputation there. Since then, he has founded the radical "Iraqi Jihad Al Qaeda" and carried out terrorist training and terrorist attacks. In October 2002, Zarqawi was accused of orchestrating the shooting of American diplomat Lawrence Foley in Amman, Jordan. After the main war in Iraq ended in May 2003, there were frequent bombings and attacks in Iraq. Zarqawi was identified by the United States as the mastermind behind a series of attacks. In November 2005, Zarqawi was accused of planning the bombings of three luxury hotels in Amman, Jordan, killing more than 60 people. In October 2003, the United States offered a reward of $5 million for Zarqawi. In February 2004, the U.S. military stationed in Iraq announced that it would raise the bounty to $10 million, and then to $25 million, which is the same value as bin Laden, the number one figure of Al Qaeda. In order to eliminate Zarqawi and the terrorist organizations he led, the U.S. troops stationed in Iraq have taken many large-scale military operations, but have never been able to capture him. On the evening of June 7, 2006, Zarqawi was killed in a US air strike. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/1lkt.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.16-21:36] 访问:76
