On March 1, 1914, China joined the Universal Postal Union.
The Republic of China joined the UPU on March 1, 1914. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese government sent representatives to attend relevant meetings held by the Universal Postal Union. On May 21, 1951, the legal seat of the UPU was the "Republic of China". The 26th General Assembly of the United Nations passed a resolution that the People's Republic of China replaced the legal seat of the "Republic of China" in the United Nations. The Universal Postal Union passed a resolution on April 13, 1972, and the People's Republic of China obtained the legal seat in the Universal Postal Union.
On April 13, 1972, the Congress of the World Postal Union adopted a resolution recognizing the Government of the People's Republic of China as the only legal representative of China in the World Postal Union, and on May 8, 1972, the Continental Government notified the World Postal Union and decided to participate in all activities of the World Postal Union. Since the early 1980s, China became a member of the Executive Council of the World Postal Union and the Advisory Council for Postal Research.
