Duncan is the greatest contemporary dancer, a great innovator in the art of dance, and a pioneer of modern dance.

Duncan was born on 27 May 1878 in San Francisco, United States. My father is a poet and my mother is a musician. Not long after Duncan was born, she has been living with her mother. Duncan is the youngest of four children. This group of brothers and sisters, influenced by their mothers since childhood, all love drama. However, their very poor family circumstances prevented them from getting formal artistic training.

Forced to make a living, Duncan started working as a dance teacher for children in the neighborhood at an early age. Together with her sister, she choreographed all kinds of beautiful dances. They use dance to express the melody of music, the implication of poetry and the charm of nature. Once in a public garden in London, Duncan showed off her beautiful dance. A noble lady discovered her beautiful dance and introduced her to the upper class for a private performance. By this time, Duncan's reputation was widely spread, but life was still embarrassing.

In 1902, Duncan arrived in Paris, and she soon became famous throughout Paris. Since then, she has been to Germany, Austria, Hungary and Greece. In 1921, the Soviet government invited Duncan to Soviet Russia. She set foot on the new land with joy and was warmly welcomed. Soon, she married Soviet poet Yesenin. In 1925, Yesenin committed suicide, and Duncan lived in Paris.

“The most free body contains the highest wisdom” is Duncan’s artistic goal and guideline. She has opposed traditional ballet since childhood, believing that ballet is not “true dance”, her dance theory is deeply influenced by the aesthetic ideas of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, Rousseau and Whitman, and her pioneering modern dance has a luxury style completely different from traditional ballet, which is more American.

Duncan's dance was a smash hit in Europe and America, and thousands of audiences in Qian Qian fell for her. Therefore, she is known as the "Queen of Dancing" and the "Mother of Modern Dance".

On September 14th, 1927, Duncan's long scarf suddenly rolled into the wheels of a car, and the spinning wheels strangled her to death on the spot. At the age of 49.
