Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Summit of the Eight Nuclear Security Countries on April 20, 1996
Twenty-nine years ago today, on April 20, 1996 (March 3, 1996 in the lunar calendar), the G-8 Nuclear Security Summit was held. The G8 Nuclear Security Summit proposed by Russian President Boris Yeltsin was held in Moscow on April 20th, 1996. The leaders of Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, Russia, France and Japan attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Yeltsin and French President Jacques Chirac. The main achievement of the meeting was the adoption of four documents, including the declaration on strengthening nuclear safety, the program against illegal trade in nuclear materials, the statement on the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and the statement on Ukraine. However, the meeting also showed that there are differences among countries, especially between seven western countries and Russia, on a series of issues. In view of NATO's eastward expansion, nuclear weapons may be deployed in the territory of newly joined NATO countries. At the meeting, Russia put forward a proposal to deploy nuclear weapons only in its own territory. On the issue of funding for the implementation of the measures to improve nuclear safety proposed at the meeting, the reactions of all parties were also inconsistent. Japanese Prime Minister Hashimoto indicated that he would provide assistance to Russia. German Chancellor Kohl believes that economic problems should not go beyond the framework of reality. Russia believes that the prospect of nuclear safety may not be bright without funds. In short, the convening of the G8 Nuclear Security Summit has brought the partnership between the United States, Europe and Russia to a new level.
