The October Incident in Hungary on 23 October 1956
Sixty-nine years ago today, on October 23, 1956 (September 20, 1956 in the lunar calendar), the October Incident in Hungary broke out. There were roadblocks in the street. After the establishment of Stalin's statue in the city center, the Prime Minister of the government and the first secretary of the Party, Rakosi, copied the Soviet model, unilaterally developed heavy industry economically, created personality cult politically, undermined the legal system, and caused strong dissatisfaction among the people. After the 20th National Congress of the Soviet Communist Party in 1956, all walks of life in Hungary lashed out at Rakosi's mistakes. In July of the same year, Gros succeeded Rakosi as the first secretary of the party, but the situation remained unstable. On October 23rd, nearly 200,000 college students and the masses in Budapest held a demonstration *, demanding Gro's resignation and Najib's coming to power. Marchers knocked down a statue of Stalin in the city and clashed with security forces. On the 24th, Najib became prime minister, and the Hungarian Workers and Peasants Party declared martial law and asked the Soviet Union to send troops to intervene. The next day, Gros was dismissed and Kadar took over as first secretary. Najib called for an end to the bloodshed and the restoration of order. At the same time, he announced the dissolution of the security forces and reached an agreement with the Soviet Union on the withdrawal of Soviet troops. When the situation in Hungary was in chaos, imperialists sent a large number of spies into Hungary, and domestic counter-revolutionaries also took the opportunity to sabotage, and the situation got out of control. On October 30th, some people were incited to attack the Budapest Municipal Party Committee building, and the secretary of the municipal party committee and the building security guards were killed. There were many killings of communists and security guards in various places. On the same day, Najib announced the end of one-party rule. On November 1st, it was announced that Hungary would withdraw from the Warsaw Pact and implement neutrality. On the 4th, the revolutionary government of Hungarian workers and peasants headed by Kadar was established. On the same day, the Soviet army marched into Budapest again, and the Najib government collapsed. On November 23, Najib was arrested. On June 16, 1958, he was sentenced to death for counter-revolutionary crimes. In July 1989, the Hungarian Supreme Court declared Nagy innocent and the previous judgment was invalid. During the Hungarian incident in 1956, more than 2,000 people were killed, tens of thousands were injured, and the economic loss amounted to more than 20 billion forints. In the Hungarian incident, this only 16-year-old girl also joined the resistance against the Soviet invasion. The bodies of Soviet officers and destroyed tanks were left behind after fierce street fighting. Women, industrial workers and intellectuals of the Petofi Club were involved in the unrest
