Kuomintang bans anti-Japanese films

Footage from the film "History of the Bloody Battle between Songhu and Shanghai" banned by the authorities

On June 30, 1932, the Propaganda Department of the Kuomintang Central Committee issued a "general order" to all film companies in Shanghai banning the production of anti-Japanese films, declaring: "All revolutionary films about the war in the future and today are banned." Anti-Japanese news films and documentaries such as History of Shanghai War, Battle of Shanghai and History of Shanghai Anti-Japanese Bloody War, which have long been banned from being shown in cinemas in the concession area, are also banned from being shown in cinemas outside the Shanghai Concession. Some films, from the content to the title, have been changed. For example, the "Japanese Army" in "Battlefield Adventures" was changed to "Bandit Army"; "The History of the Bloody War of the Northeast Volunteers' Anti-Japanese Army" was also changed to "The History of the Bloody War of the Northeast Volunteers' Anti-Japanese Army" because of the word "Anti-Japanese" in the title. The screenplay reflecting the anti-Japanese war was even more stifled. However, Japan produced a large number of fascist films advocating aggression against China and promoting the "power of the imperial army" with the background of "September 18th" and "December 18th". With the connivance of the Shanghai concession authorities and the acquiescence of the Kuomintang, they were openly shown in Shanghai Concession. It was shown in Japanese cinemas in the concession, insulting the Chinese nation. In this regard, patriotic filmmakers expressed great indignation. Film Art, a magazine founded by left-wing filmmakers, put forward nine "?" In a row to severely question this matter. It is pointed out that this is: "A disgrace to the Chinese film industry!!" The magazine "Film Art" published and exposed the Kuomintang's "general order" prohibiting the shooting of anti-Japanese films.
