Piccinny's Opera Album

Born on 16 January 1728 in a family of musicians in Bari, he died on 7 May 1800 in Passi near Paris. He studied at the Saint-Onofrio School of Music in Naples from 1742 to 1754 and was a well-known student of Leo and F. Durant. In 1754 his comedy opera The Daughters of the Horror was performed in Naples, and two years later his opera Zenobia was also successful, establishing his reputation as an opera composer. In 1760, his most famous comedy opera Chekina (also known as The Good Daughters) premiered in Naples, shooting the whole of Italy.

He is a prolific composer, and six theaters in Rome once performed his six operas at the same time, which can be called his heyday. After receiving a cold reception, he had to return to Naples. In 1776, he was recruited by Paris and became the queen's vocal teacher. He wrote the opera Laurent (1778) in Paris, and became an opponent of C. W. Gluck, who had written the opera Ifiglia in the Tauro on the same script. Gluck's performance was a great success, and Piccinny's production in 1781, although it was not a failure, was dwarfed by Gluck's. The struggle between those who supported him and those who supported Gluck was fierce, but he himself admired Gluck.
