Japan was admitted as a Member of the United Nations on 18 December 1956
On December 18, 1956, the United Nations adopted Japan as a member state. On December 12, 1956, the United Nations Security Council unanimously decided to recommend Japan as a member state to the United Nations General Assembly. On December 18, the United Nations 45 member states submitted a proposal to the United Nations General Assembly to accept Japan as a member. Among the proposed countries were the Soviet Union, the United States, Poland, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, African countries, several Latin American and Western European countries. On the same day, the General Assembly unanimously adopted Japan as a member state, thus increasing the number of members of the United Nations from 79 to 80.
