130 years ago today, on January 4, 1895 (December 9, 1894 in the lunar calendar), American industrialist and aeronautical engineer Lilloy Grumman was born. Grumman Leroy Grumman (English: Leroy Grumman, January 4, 1895-October 4, 1982) was born in New York. He was a famous American industrialist and aeronautical engineer and the founder of Grumman Company. Early work Grumman earned an engineering degree from Cornell University in 1916. While serving in the Navy Reserve, he received advanced flight training in Pensacola, Florida, and eventually became a flight instructor. Later, the Navy sent Grumman to MIT to study aeronautical engineering, which was still a completely new discipline at the time. In 1919, the U.S. Navy sent Grumman to Lonin Aircraft Engineering Company to supervise the manufacture of 50 monoplanes ordered by the Navy. Because of Grumman's excellent performance, the company decided to hire Grumman as its general manager in 1920. In 1929, Lonin Aircraft Engineering Company was acquired by Chestone Aircraft Company and moved to Pennsylvania. Grumman, Jack Swabble and some of their subordinates decided to quit and set up their own company. Grumman Company Grumman and Jack Swabble, both Long Islanders, decided to choose the location of their new company on Long Island. On January 2, 1930, the new company opened in an abandoned factory building in Baldwin that once belonged to Cox-Klemin Aircraft Company. At the beginning, the company's main business was to repair damaged Luoning amphibious aircraft and manufacture truck bodies. Grumman's first aircraft was the Grumman FF-1, a biplane two-seater with retractable landing gear produced for the U.S. Navy. Grumman subsequently designed several successful aircraft. Due to the high reliability of Grumman's products, people often refer to the aircraft produced by Grumman as "Grumman iron". In 1939, Grumman was a small company with only one doorman. In 1940, France and Britain began ordering F4F Wildcat aircraft with a speed of 330 miles per hour. In 1943, Grumman had 25,500 employees. Its main products are F4F Wildcat fighter, F6F Hellcat fighter and TBF Avenger torpedo bomber. The TBF Avenger torpedo bomber is the largest single-engine aircraft built during World War II. In March 1945, Grumman's monthly production reached 664 aircraft, setting a record that has not been broken so far. Like other military aircraft manufacturers, Grumman experienced a post-war depression. But Grumman successfully led the company's transformation and found a new civil aircraft market. Thanks to its successful management, Grumman laid off only 5,000 employees and retained many veterans' jobs. Grumman's famous products at this stage are Agcat agricultural machines and Gulfstream commercial machines. Grumman built the lunar module in the Apollo program. In his later years, Grumman retired in 1966. Grumman died October 4, 1982. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/112l.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.16-20:12] 访问:76
