On May 20, 1931, Zhou Yiqun, the main founder of the Red Army and revolutionary base areas in western Hunan and Hubei, was ambushed and killed by Kuomintang troops near Jiajia Pavilion in Yueyang, Hunan Province. Zhou Yiqun entered Whampoa Military Academy in October 1924. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in November. During the Northern Dynasty War, he successively served as the director of the political department of the division and army in He Long's army. In 1927, he participated in the Nanchang Uprising and served as the commander of the Third Division of the 20th Army.
