Thirty-six years ago today, on September 12th, 1989 (August 13th, 1989 in the lunar calendar), the Polish Solidarity Union formed a cabinet. On September 12, 1989, the Polish parliament approved Mazowiecki, leader of Solidarity, as prime minister of the government. Among socialist countries in Eastern Europe, this is the first time that non-Communists have come forward to form a cabinet.
