Breaking-News >> WorldNews World Bank: Chinese average daily consumption has grown more than seven times in 30 years
According to the World Bank, between 1990 and 2020, the average daily consumption level of the average Chinese population grew by more than seven times, significantly higher than the average growth level of other countries and regions in the world by 1.3 times. This significant growth has driven China's one billion people out of poverty, a figure close to three times the current population of the United States, becoming the largest case of population upstream in the short history of the modern world. At the same level of initial income, the United States, France and Germany took about 100 years to a similar size of income growth, the UK took 170 years, while China only took 30 years. The research uses the household survey data of the World Bank's Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP), covering 172 countries and regions around the world, accounting for about 98% of the population. According to the report, as a populous country in the world, China's economic status has improved particularly significantly. Although the share of the global population dropped slightly from 21% in 1990 to 18% in 2020, the per capita income as a share of global per capita income increased significantly from 17% to 77%, an increase of more than 4.5 times. This change makes China's influence in the global income pattern better match its population size. China’s performance is outstanding compared to regions close to population size.In 2020, both India and the African continent accounted for 18% of the global population, close to China, and in 1990 both countries had per capita income levels higher than China.H, over the past 30 years, the per capita income ratio in Africa has declined, with India achieving only moderate growth, while China has achieved cross-sectional development. The study also showed that consumption levels in all income groups in China increased significantly. 20% of the highest income groups increased consumption almost eight times, and 20% of the lowest income groups increased more than six times. Though the growth rate of high income groups was slightly higher, even the growth rate of low income groups was much higher than the growth rate of all income groups in India, which was only 1.5 times. More profound changes are reflected in the intergenerational dimension. In 2020, the income level of 90% of China's population exceeded that of the top 10% in 1990. Data show that the average daily income gap between the highest-income group in 1990 and the lowest-income group in 2020 is less than US $1. Taking 30 years as a generation, the living standard of children of the lowest 10% of income groups today is close to that of parents of the top 10% of income groups 30 years ago.
