On this day 644 years ago, on June 15th, 1381 (May 23rd, 1381 in the lunar calendar), the British peasant leader Watt Taylor was assassinated and the uprising failed. At the end of May 1381, Essex farmers killed tax collectors who collected poll taxes, marking the beginning of the uprising. Soon, it expanded to 25 of the 40 counties in the country. The farmers of Essex and Kent, led by Watt Taylor, marched into London. The poor people in the city opened the gates, and the insurgents became masters of London for a short time. Peasants burned down the mansions of ministers most hated by the people, killed judges, and released those in prison. The insurgents forced the king to come out and negotiate. In the negotiations of Myrnd, they demanded the abolition of serfdom, amnesty for the insurgents, freedom of trade in the whole country, and a monetary rent of four pence per acre. King Charles II pretended to agree, and immediately issued a certificate of liberation of serfs stamped with the king's seal, and issued a pardon as a guarantee. Some people were satisfied with the king's promise and left the insurrection, but most poor peasants under Taylor's leadership continued to offer to negotiate with the king. While negotiations were underway, Watt Taylor was stabbed to death by the mayor of London.
