Breaking-News >> TodayHistory May 20, 1799: Birth of the French writer Balzac
Today, 226 years ago, on May 20th, 1799 (April 16th, 1799 in the lunar calendar), the famous French writer Balzac was born. Honoré de Balzac (May 20, 1799-August 18, 1850), known as the "father of modern French fiction". Balzac was born in a bourgeois family who became rich after the French Revolution. Because his parents' married life was not happy, he was given to his nursing mother for foster care before Balzac was full moon, and he could only be reunited with his family on Sundays. Balzac was the eldest, followed by three younger siblings. However, because he was fostered in his nursing mother's house for a long time, his childhood was neither caressed by his parents nor enjoyed much joy. In his later recollection, he once said, "This is the most terrible childhood that any person has ever suffered." In November 1816, Balzac was admitted to the law department of the university. After graduating from law school, he turned down the respected legal profession chosen for him by his family, and aspired to become a letter. In order to obtain the material security of independent life and creation, he tried to write and get involved in business, engaged in publishing and printing, but all ended in bankruptcy. All this provided him with extremely precious first-hand materials to understand and describe society. He continued to pursue and explore, conducted in-depth research on philosophy, economics, history, natural science, theology and other fields, and accumulated extremely extensive knowledge. When Balzac was in college, his parents arranged for him to be a trainee in the firm of an ad litem agent and a notary in order to familiarize him with his future career as soon as possible. Several years of probation life benefited him a lot. Not only was he familiar with civil procedures, but he also glimpsed all kinds of mysteries of Parisian society from this legal window, saw the evils under the prosperous scene, and accumulated a lot of materials for future creations. In January 1819, Balzac graduated from law school, but in the same year, he refused a position in the notary office arranged by his family, insisting on pursuing the literary path without subsistence. In order to prove his literary talent to his parents, he worked hard for a year almost without leaving home and completed his debut poetic drama Cromwell. However, the result was disappointed. An academician of the French Academy said after watching the play: "This author can do anything but do not engage in literature." To get rid of his financial dependence on his parents, Balzac concocted and wrote popular novels for booksellers under various pseudonyms to make ends meet. Of course, these commercial works purely for the purpose of making money would not bring him the honor he expected, and later he even denied that they were written by him. Later, in order to seek a stable source of income for his serious creation, he decided to temporarily abandon writing and go into business. In 1822, when Balzac was suffering from a cold reception and was in pain and despair, he met Madame Bernie. Mrs. Bernie's mother was the queen's lady-in-waiting, and was very familiar with court life, the secrets of communication and the fate of women. Twenty-two years older than Balzac, Madame Bernie has perfect tenderness, elegant speech, refreshing compassion, and kind maternal love. All this deeply attracted Balzac, and made Balzac feel the warmth of maternal love that he had never experienced since childhood. She had a great influence on his life. Balzac referred to her as his mother, friend, dependent, partner, and counselor. Since 1825, I have tried the publishing industry successively, opened printing houses and foundries, and each time they ended in failure. Four years of ups and downs in the business world have made him taste enough of bankruptcy, bankruptcy, liquidation and debt. Finally, his mother came forward to pay his debt. Desperate Balzac had to give up and re-enter literary creation. All the setbacks in life are transformed into successful creative material in his pen. At this time, Balzac decided to make great achievements in literature. He placed a statue of Napoleon in his study, and engraved the words on the scabbard of the statue: "What he has not finished with his sword, I will finish it with a pen!" In 1829, Balzac finished the novel Zhu'an Party Men. The historical novel "Juan Party Man" is Balzac's first work published under his real name. It describes the riots against the republican government in Brittany, France in 1800, instigated by the royalists. The author gives the heroic soldiers of the Republic the glory they deserve, but also greatly beautifies the Marquis Mondolan, the leader of the Juan Party, showing his sympathy for the nobility at that time. In order to write this novel, he carefully studied the historical documents about the riots, personally went to Brittany to investigate the situation of mountains and rivers and peasant life, interviewed witnesses and participants of the riots, and collected many anecdotes about Zhu An Party members from his friend, the Duchess of Berry. The transition from writing monster novels to writing historical novels is Balzac's first important step towards critical realism. What he describes in Zhu An Dangren is not ancient history, but important events belonging to the category of contemporary social life. Focusing on contemporary social life is a characteristic of Balzac's Human Comedy in the future. Since he wrote Zhu An Dangren in 1829, Balzac's creation began to enter a mature period, that is, the period of Human Comedy (1829-1848). In the 1930s and 1940s, apart from devoting himself to literary and artistic creation, he also went to the salons of the upper class in Paris and wrote articles for several newspapers and periodicals. His contact with a wide range of life. His fame was shocked by the book "Donkey Skin" published in 1831. In 1834, he finished his work on Old Man Goriot, which is also one of Balzac's best works. To make himself a Napoleon in literary career, he created a large number of works with amazing perseverance in 1930s and 1940s. He created a lot in his life, writing 91 novels and creating 2,472 vivid characters, collectively known as Human Comedy. Human Comedy is known as "the encyclopedia of capitalist society". On March 14, 1850, Madame de Hansga was compassionate and willing to grant Balzac's wish for more than ten years. They were married at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Berkichev, Ukraine. Apart from the newlyweds, only two witnesses and a priest attended. More than a month later, they set off for France. The journey was disastrous for Balzac, who was terminally ill. When they finally returned to Balzac's carefully arranged love nest, he could no longer step on the steps, and the footsteps of death were getting closer. In his last days, Victor Hugo often visited him, and Balzac complained to old friends that he could not finish The Human Comedy. At 11: 30 on the night of August 18th, 1850, Balzac died with the regret of not finishing Human Comedy.
