On July 11, 1989, the Chinese geologist Zhang Ji died.
Thirty-six years ago today, on July 11, 1989 (June 9, 1989 in the lunar calendar), Chinese geologist Xu Jie died. Chinese geologist Xu Jie Xu Jie courtesy name Xingwu. He was born on January 29th, 1901 in a peasant family in Xujiedu Town, Guangde, Anhui Province. My ancestral home is Luoshan, Henan Province. Due to family poverty, my grandfather brought his family to southern Anhui to open up wasteland and settle down. Died in Beijing on July 11, 1989. He is a paleontologist, a stratigrapher. He was the first to comprehensively study the structure, systematic classification, evolution, ecology and division and comparison of graptolite-bearing strata, and was an important founder of graptolite paleontology and biostratigraphy in China. Xu Jie graduated in 1919, just as the May 4th Movement broke out in Beijing. The news spread to the south, which also brought anger to middle school students in the county. Anti-imperialist and patriotic thoughts are widely circulated among progressive young students. The patriotic thoughts of "setting up industries" and "enriching the country and strengthening the army" sprouted among some students. It is with this mood that Xu Jie resolutely went north to apply for Peking University, the birthplace of the May 4th Movement. When he enrolled in school, he heard that studying geology can run industry, so he decided to study geology without hesitation. Everything comes to him who waits. Through 2 years of preparatory course and 4 years of undergraduate college life, under the guidance of famous teachers such as Li Siguang, I acquired relatively solid geological knowledge, which laid a good foundation for future geological scientific research activities. He studied diligently and was praised by his teacher many times. During his school years, he published his debut novel entitled "The Period of Terrain Formation" in the journal of Peking University Geological Research Association. He also actively participated in extracurricular academic activities and joined the Geological Society of China. Xu Jie first described and studied the graptolite fauna in southern China in detail, and on this basis, divided and compared the graptolite-bearing strata, and named some early Paleozoic strata. Later, from the perspective of biological evolution theory, he started with studying the internal fine structure of graptolite, and discussed the evolution process and classification of graptolite. He studied the relationship between different graptolite groups and the surrounding environment, and then explored the development, evolution and migration of graptolite groups from two aspects: internal and external factors. On the basis of studying and comparing the distribution of graptolite-bearing strata in China and other parts of the world, he put forward the problem of the origin center of graptolite on the earth. These important conclusions have very important theoretical and practical significance for studying the global Paleozoic strata and its division. Xu Jie has made great contributions to the country and people during his more than 60 years of geological undertakings. The party and the people also gave him lofty honors. In July 1949, on the eve of the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was sent to Beijing to attend the preparatory meeting of the National Science Conference. Since September 1954, he has been successively elected as a deputy to the 1st to 6th National People's Congress; Since March 1978, he has been elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the 5th and 6th National People's Congress. Since 1956, he has served as a member of the 2nd-5th Central Standing Committee of the Chinese * League. In 1955, he was elected as a member of the Department of Geosciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 1958, he has been elected as a member of the 1st National Committee of China Association for Science and Technology and a member of the Standing Committee of the 2nd National Committee. In June 1986, he was awarded the title of honorary member. Since 1957, he has served as executive director, vice chairman and acting chairman of the Geological Society of China. In January 1984, he was awarded the title of honorary director of the 33rd Council.
