June 29, 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon
On this day, 43 years ago, June 29, 1982 (May 9, 1982 in the lunar calendar), Israel invaded Lebanon. Israeli artillery blockaded Beirut. On June 29, 1982, Israeli troops advanced deep into southern Lebanon. Israeli troops engaged Palestinian and Syria troops on the coastal road south of Beirut and besieged the headquarters of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the western half of the capital. In eastern Beirut, Israeli jets destroyed Syria surface-to-air missiles deployed in the Bekaa Valley and engaged in fierce air combat with the Syria air force flying Soviet-made MiG fighter jets. So far, Israel has claimed that the purpose of its military operations is to punish the Palestinian guerrillas and eliminate PLO leaders. Faced with huge international pressure and the threat that the Soviet Union might intervene and go into battle, Israeli Prime Minister Begin had to declare that he would abandon the set goal. In a speech to the Knesset, Begin proposed allowing Palestinian guerrillas to leave Beirut with weapons. Two days ago, the Israeli cabinet demanded that "all 15 terrorist organizations... Surrender to Lebanon troops. "There seem to be several reasons for Begin's change of position. First, the United States no longer supports Israel's invasion of Lebanon. Reagan administration officials revealed that President Reagan had written to Begin, and he sounded" firmly "demanding Begin's withdrawal. In response to Begin's request to invite him to visit Jerusalem, Secretary of State Hague's attitude towards the matter was extremely clear. "I've thought about it," Haig said."But today's discussions with the Israelis indicate that such a visit is not necessary at this time." Reagan also had several "candid" meetings with Soviet leader Brezhnev, and he also warned Begin that the Soviets were willing to help the Syria. In addition, Begin also faces the problem of growing anti-war sentiment in the country. Opposition leader Shimon Peres warned that the world is watching Israel's actions on television. Some Kenesai members still say Begin went too far. "We don't want to make those terrorists infamous." Liberal Party member Droll Zegmen said,"It's true that they don't deserve respect, they are homicides, but they are also human beings. Therefore, we do not want to humiliate them." On the 6th, Israel launched an aggression against Lebanon. 20,000 Israeli soldiers and hundreds of tanks crossed the border and entered southern Lebanon. By the 9th, some Israeli troops had advanced near Beirut. Other Israeli troops were blocked in the south of the capital and engaged in fierce battles with Palestinians and Syria. In Saida-Sur-Helda and Damur and other places, the two sides met hand-to-hand combat. In eastern Beirut, Israeli troops fought with Syria troops to control the road to Damascus. Israel claims to have wiped out most of Syria's missiles deployed in the Bekaa Valley, if not all of them. An Israeli army spokesman said 61 MiG aircraft and five helicopters were shot down over the Bekaa Valley. Syria reported that it shot down 19 Israeli aircraft. Israeli mobile division in Lebanon Israeli troops escorting Palestinians Classic comment: Israel is a wolf placed in the sheep of the Middle East, which shows that the Middle East will not have a peaceful life.
