On January 6, 1997, my country successfully constructed a full physical map of the rice genome for the first time in the world
On this day, 28 years ago, on January 6, 1997 (November 27, 1996, the lunar calendar), my country successfully constructed a full physical map of the rice genome for the first time in the world. On January 6, 1997, the State Science and Technology Commission, China Academy of Sciences and Shanghai City People's Government jointly held a press conference at the Shanghai Academic Activity Center to announce that Chinese scientists have successfully constructed a complete physical map of the rice genome for the first time in the world, which is another major breakthrough made by my country in the field of life sciences. Under the leadership of researcher Hong Guofan, after more than three years of hard work, the National Center for Genetics Research of China Academy of Sciences successfully constructed a high-resolution rice genome physical full map for the first time in the world using the completed BAC library of 12 rice chromosomes. This achievement achieved by Chinese scientists in the research of the Rice Genome Project has made a significant contribution to the final revelation of the mystery of rice genetic information and crop breeding. The rice genome consists of 12 chromosomes with a total length of 430 million nucleotides. The rice genome research plan includes three major contents, namely, the construction of the rice genome genetic map, physical map, and the determination of the full sequence of DNA. Countries such as Japan, the United States, India, South Korea, and the Philippines carry out rice genome research. Japan first constructed a genetic map of the rice genome in 1994, making the construction of a physical map of the rice genome a commanding height in the tough battle in this field. In the rice genome research project, the physical map is a connecting link between the past and the next. According to the physical map, it can not only lay the foundation for finally solving the mystery of all genetic information of rice, but also efficiently and systematically provide agricultural genetics and breeding through various modern technologies such as positional cloning. Provide important genes and related information needed. The characteristics of the physical map of the rice genome constructed in my country are as follows: (1) The resolution (basic scale) is 120,000 nucleotides. This high resolution allows the full sequence of DNA to be determined directly, while simplifying the steps of obtaining the required genes; (2) It contains 565 genetic molecular markers, many of which have been measured, which will greatly speed up the acquisition of genes needed for cereal crops;(3) It contains nearly 100 universal genetic molecular markers, which are common in the genomes of six major crops, including barley, wheat, oat, corn, sorghum, and sugarcane. Therefore, the construction of the physical map of the rice genome will play a major role in agricultural genetics and breeding. After researcher Hong Guofan reported this achievement at the International Conference on Rice Molecular Biology held not long ago, it aroused strong repercussions, and many scholars took the initiative to express their willingness to further cooperate with China scientists.
