On this day, 78 years ago, on August 7, 1947 (June 21, 1947 in the lunar calendar), Liu and Deng's army began to march thousands of miles into the Dabie Mountains. After Liu Deng's army led the main force of the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Field Army to forcibly cross the Yellow River and win, it kicked off the strategic offensive. On August 7, 1947, Liu and Deng's army marched eastward and began the feat of leaping thousands of miles into the Dabie Mountains. The Dabie Mountains stand at the junction of Hubei, Henan and Anhui provinces. They are the enemy's most strategically sensitive and weakest area. The Liu Deng Field Army was divided into three routes. The enemy crossed the Longhai Road first and advanced towards the Dabie Mountains in a continuous rapid march. Chiang Kai-shek mistakenly judged that the People's Liberation Army had failed to cross the north and was forced to "flee south", so he sent 20 brigades to chase after them, and another 4 brigades to attack sideways on the Pinghan Road in an attempt to annihilate the People's Liberation Army in the Yellow River Flood Area. There was silt everywhere and there were no roads. The Liu Deng Field Army braved the bombing of enemy aircraft and forged ahead tenaciously and crossed the Yellow River Flood Area that was more than 30 miles wide on August 17. Then, he crossed the Wo River, Shahe River, and Honghe River, and lost the pursuit of the Kuomintang army. The enemy suddenly realized this and urgently ordered a reorganized division and a brigade to descend south along Pinghan Road and deploy defenses at the Ruhe River in an attempt to stop Liu Deng's Field Army. The Liu Deng Field Army destroyed and buried heavy equipment and continued to move forward. On the afternoon of the 23rd, the vanguard troops in the middle road set up a pontoon bridge on the Ru River under the enemy's fierce bombardment. That night, the main force began to cross the river, broke through the enemy's river defense position, covered the Central Plains Bureau and the Field Army Command Headquarters, and successfully broke through the dangerous pass. On August 28, the People's Liberation Army all crossed the Huaihe River and entered the Dabie Mountains. They immediately organized troops to implement the strategy. At this time, more than 20 brigades of the Kuomintang army had crossed the Huaihe River one after another, posing as a decisive battle with the People's Liberation Army. The Liu and Deng Field Army adopted the method of avoiding the strong and attacking the weak. They concentrated one force and successively attacked the garrison forces in Shangcheng and Guangshan areas in September, attracting most of the Kuomintang army's mobile forces to the northern foot of the Dabie Mountains, ensuring the rapid deployment of troops into southeastern Henan, western Anhui, Hubei, Anhui, and eastern Hubei. As of September 30, 24 county towns had been liberated and democratic regimes had been established in 17 counties. Relying on mountainous areas, the rear areas had been resettled, successfully completed the strategic development of the Dabie Mountains and opened up the Dabie Mountains base area.
