On September 5, 1894, China ancient philologist Rong Geng was born
On this day, 131 years ago, September 5, 1894 (August 6, 1894 in the lunar calendar), China palaeographist Rong Geng was born. Rong Geng (1894.9.5~1983.3.6) was a paleontologist and expert on bronze inscriptions. The word Xibai is called Songzhai. A native of Dongguan County, Guangdong Province. When he was a child, he was familiar with "Shuo Wen Jie Zi" and Wu Dacheng's "Shuo Wen Gu Bu". In 1922, he was introduced by Luo Zhenyu to enter the Graduate School of Chinese Studies at Peking University. After graduation, he served as Professor Xiang of Yanjing University, editor-in-chief of Yanjing Journal and appraisal member of the Peking Antiquities Exhibition Institute, professor and head of the Chinese Department of Lingnan University, editor-in-chief of Lingnan Journal, professor of the Chinese Department of Sun Yat-sen University, etc. He became famous as "Jin Wen Bian"(Yi 'antang, 1925; revised edition published by Hong Kong Commercial Press in 1939; Science Press, updated edition published in 1959). This is the first Jinwen Dictionary after Wu Dacheng's "Shuo Wen Gu Yi Bu". It is one of the must-have tools for ancient character researchers. In 1935, he collected the bronze inscriptions of the Qin and Han Dynasties and wrote "The Continuation of the Bronze Texts". The updated edition of "Jin Wen Bian" published in 1959 contains more than 18000 characters based on inscriptions on more than 3,000 bronzes unearthed in previous dynasties. You can see all the known and unknown inscriptions on bronze wares in the Shang, Zhou, Qin and Han Dynasties. This is a fairly complete dictionary of bronze characters. "General Examination of Yi Weapons in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties"(Harvard Yanjing Society of Yanjing University, 1941) is another important book of his. This is a comprehensive monograph on bronze ware in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. It is divided into two parts. The first part is a general theory, detailing the basic theory and basic knowledge of bronzes and is divided into 15 chapters. The following part is a sub-discussion, which divides bronzes into four categories according to their uses. The book has a total of more than 300,000 words and 500 drawings. It has detailed citations and detailed textual research documents. This is a book that systematically explains and scientifically classifies bronzes. It is an important reference book for the study of bronzes. In this regard, he also wrote "A General Theory of Bronze Ware in the Yin and Zhou Dynasties"(1958). He was good at identifying bronzes. After years of accumulation, he compiled and printed many catalogs of bronzes, such as "Catalog of Yi Artifacts in Baoyun Tower"(1929),"Record of Jin Wen of Qin and Han Dynasties"(1931),"Catalog of Ji Jin in Songzhai"(1934),"Catalog of Yi Artifacts in Wuying Hall"(1934),"Catalog of Overseas Ji Jin"(1935),"Catalog of Yi Artifacts in Shanzhai"(1936),"Era of Qin Gong Zhong Gui"(1937),"Ten Kinds of Lanting Collected Journals"(1939), etc. Among them, the "Catalog of Yi Artifacts in Wuying Hall" set a precedent for printing patterns on bronze utensils, providing valuable reference materials for the study of pattern forms. The "Catalog of Yi Artifacts in Shanzhai" compiles bronzes collected by Liu Tizhi. The compilation of "Overseas Lucky Gold Tulu" is a collection of copper utensils in Japan. This provides domestic scholars with data on bronzes lost overseas, which is very meaningful. In terms of research on calligraphy and inscriptions, he wrote many works such as "A Record of Fulu Calligraphy and Calligraphy"(1936) and "A Record of Portraits of Wu Temple in the Han and Liang Dynasties"(1936). Professor Rong Geng, a famous China palaeographist, archaeologist and calligrapher
