August 17, 1850: Saint Martin, leader of the South American War of Independence, died

175 years ago today, on August 17, 1850 (the tenth day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar), Saint Martin, leader of the South American War of Independence, passed away.

José de San Martín (1778 - 1850) was a leader of the Spanish colonial War of Independence in southern South America. Born into the family of Argentine colonial officials. He returned to Argentina in 1812 and participated in the struggle against Spanish colonial rule. In 1814, he served as Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Route of the Federal Patriotic Army of La Puta, Argentina. In early 1817, he led troops from the western garrison across the Andes Mountains, which were as high as 10,000 feet, and unexpectedly attacked Chile. After defeating the Spanish army at the Battle of Chacabucco and the Battle of Cuba in 1818, Chile immediately declared its independence. In 1820, he led his army to go to Peru by sea from Chile. In July of the following year, he captured Lima and declared Peru's independence. He was awarded the title of "Protector of the Nation." In July 1822, he went to Guayaquil (Ecuador) to meet Bolívar, but had differences of opinion and resigned himself. He went to Europe in 1824 and lived overseas for the rest of his life.
