On June 16, 1922, Chen Jiongming bombarded Sun Yat-sen
103 years ago today, on June 16, 1922 (May 21, 1922, the lunar calendar), Chen Jiongming bombarded Sun Yat-sen. Sun Yat-sen retreated to the Yongfeng Ship to command the counterattack. In the early morning of June 16, 1922, more than 4000 troops of Chen Jiongming suddenly surrounded the presidential palace and fired at the Yuexiu Tower where Sun Yat-sen lived. On the 15th, Ye Ju, the commander-in-chief of the Guangdong Army, received a secret order from Chen Jiongming and held a military meeting in Baiyun Mountain. It was decided that Xiong Luo would be the commander of the city and Hong Zhaolin would be the vanguard force to start besiege the presidential palace. Early in the morning of the same day, Chen Ce urgently convened a meeting of the captains of each grandson. Studying contingency measures, it was determined that Chen Ce was in command of the Baobi ship of the Yangtze River Defense Fleet, and each ship was on strict alert. Later, Chen Ceji went to the Yuexiu Building of the Presidential Palace and reported that the situation was critical. We respectfully request Sun Yat-sen to come to the fleet so that we can order a punitive attack when the Chen army defected. Sun Yat-sen still failed to make up his mind. Chen Ce quickly returned to the fleet and ordered all warships to raise fire and anchor to enter a state of combat readiness to respond at any time. At 5 p.m. that day, Sun Yat-sen was still unconcerned. He once said to Chen Keyu, commander of the guard, and others: "Jingcun (Chen Jiongming) and I have still sent telegrams back and forth in recent days to discuss the armaments of Guangdong and Guangxi. At present, it may be some arrogant and tough generals under his command who are using their names to make trouble for the authorities. They can return to defense after paying their salaries and understanding. Jingcun once said that he was willing to guarantee his life and personality. I believe he would not dare to do anything that would offend his superiors. Moreover, I will return to Shaoguan tomorrow. Will there be anything else tonight?" In the middle of the night on the 15th, the rebels first occupied the Ishii Arsenal Factory and then surrounded the presidential palace. Sun Yat-sen's life was in danger. Chen Ce heard the news at Jinjiang Tower on the East Dike. He hurriedly jumped down from the second floor and quickly rushed back to the fleet. He commanded the Baobi ship to sail near the Changdi Tianyu Wharf, ready to meet Sun Yat-sen. At that time, Lin Shuwei, a soldier in the presidential palace, and Lin Zhimian, secretary of the presidential palace, knew the situation and urged Sun Yat-sen to evacuate the dangerous area. With their support, Sun Yat-sen left Yuexiu Tower. He was interrogated twice by the rebels on the way, but he finally arrived at Changdi Tianyu Wharf safely and took a small boat onto the Baobi ship, which had long been on fire and anchored. On the 17th, Sun Yat-sen transferred to the Yongfeng ship and issued a telegram to discuss the issue.
