Anthony Burgess (1917~1993) was a well-known contemporary British novelist, playwright, critic and composer. Born on February 25, 1917, in Manchester to a Catholic middle-class family. He majored in English literature and English phonetics at the University of Manchester. After graduating in 1940, he served for six years in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II. From 1946 to 50, he taught at the University of Birmingham, and from 1954 to 59, he was officially stationed in Malaysia and Brunei to be responsible for education.
