Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On July 8, 1861, the Russian Minister settled in Beijing
On this day, 164 years ago, July 8, 1861 (June 1, 1861 in the lunar calendar), the Russian envoy settled in Beijing. On July 8, 1861, Russian Minister Bayusek (translated as Balujek) settled in Beijing. This was the first Russian envoy to China. Previously, Russian envoys to China were not envoys to China, but envoys and special envoys. In October 1860, after the exchange of letters between China and Britain on the Treaty of Tianjin and the signing of the Treaty of Beijing, Russia obtained the right to be an envoy in Beijing on the basis of most-favored-nation status. Since then, there began to be Russian envoys in China. Similarly, before the signing of the Beijing Treaty in 1860, since the Qing government had never accepted the request of an envoy to Beijing, and there was no treaty stipulating it, envoys from Britain, the United States and other countries in China could not be called envoys. In 1861, the Qing government established the Prime Minister's Yamen. Britain, France, the United States and other countries were able to set up embassies in Beijing either in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Tianjin, the Treaty of Beijing, or under the most-favored-nation status. Only then did they have envoys in China. The time when the first envoy of the relevant country arrived in Beijing was as follows: March 25, 1861 for France (Minister Bourbronn); March 26, 1861 for Britain (Minister Pruss); The United States (Minister Paul Anson) was July 20, 1862.
