87 years ago today, on August 18, 1938 (July 23, 1938, the lunar calendar), Yuan Muzhi and Wu Yinxian founded the Yan 'an Film Troupe. In August 1938, Yuan Muzhi went to Hong Kong and purchased a complete set of 16mm photographic equipment such as cameras, processors, projectors, and tens of thousands of meters of film. He also mobilized Wu Yanxian, a photographer who had worked with him in Dentsu and Stars before the war, came from Shanghai to work. It was just when Dutch film artist Joris Ivens came to China to shoot documentaries. Due to obstruction, Ivens was unable to go to Yan 'an or other anti-Japanese base areas to shoot. Ivens met with Yuan Muzhi and decided to hand over the Emo camera and film he brought to Yuan Muzhi and others. Wu Yanxian, who had just arrived from Shanghai to Wuhan, took a taxi to the agreed roadside to receive the camera and film. Ivens wrote in an article: Before leaving Hankou, I also thought that since I couldn't go to Yan 'an in person, I could completely hand over my camera to our comrades in China and let them take it to Yan' an to work. In this way, with the help of comrades of the Communist Party of China, it was decided to hand over the camera to a China comrade in a taxi one night. It was late at night, and on a street in Hankou, I saw the taxi. At that time, I couldn't see clearly what this China comrade looked like. After I saw him, I hurriedly handed the camera to him. At the same time, I said to him excitedly in a low voice: "Yan 'an! Yan 'an!" The comrade nodded and left. Yuan Muzhi and Wu Yanxian arrived in Yan 'an with film equipment and established the "Yan' an Film Troupe" under the General Political Department of the Eighth Route Army.
