On this day, 74 years ago, on April 29, 1951 (March 24, 1951 in the lunar calendar), Iran implemented a movement to nationalize oil. On March 15, 1951, the Iranian National Assembly passed the Oil Nationalization Act. On April 29, Iran's Upper and Lower Houses nominated Mohammad Mossadegh, leader of the radical faction of the National Front, as prime minister. On May 2, the Mosaddegh government implemented a bill to nationalize the Iranian Oil Company. On May 26, Britain requested the International Court of Justice to arbitrate its oil nationalization dispute with Iran. On the 28th of the same month, the Iranian government notified Britain and the International Court of Justice that it did not recognize the International Court of Justice's authority to rule on the oil dispute between Britain and Iran. On July 5, the International Court of Justice in The Hague still ruled against Iran. On September 12, the Iranian government issued an ultimatum to the British government and sent troops to occupy Abadan City on the 27th. All British personnel of the Anglo-Iranian Petroleum Company evacuated Abadan City in October.
