On May 30, 2003 (April 30, 2003 in the lunar calendar), the China international rescue team went to the earthquake-stricken area of Algeria and returned home successfully. At 19:45 on May 21, 2003, an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred in northern Algeria. The epicenter was located in the city of Bumirdas, more than 50 kilometers east of the capital Algiers. According to information provided by the China Embassy in Algeria at 8 a.m. on the 22nd, an earthquake in northern Afghanistan on the evening of the 21st has killed four employees of China construction companies. The earthquake has killed 1100 people and injured 7000 others. At 18:15 Beijing time on the 23rd, the China International Rescue Team dispatched a rescue team led by Deputy Director Yue Mingsheng and composed of 30 experienced rescue team members (the other 5 accompanying reporters), carrying 3 search dogs and rescue equipment and items, and flew from the Capital Airport to the earthquake-stricken area of Algeria on a civil aviation plane. Arrived at Algiers Capital Airport at 2 a.m. local time on the 23rd. This is the first time that the China International Rescue Team, which has only been established for two years, has gone abroad to carry out rescue operations. On May 30, the China international rescue team successfully completed its rescue mission to the earthquake-stricken area in Algeria and returned home. China Vice Premier Hui Liangyu met with the China International Rescue Team at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on June 5.
