63 years ago today, November 20, 1962 (October 24, 1962 in the lunar calendar), a government crisis occurred in West Germany. On November 20, 1962, Adenauer, the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, all 20 ministers of the Adenauer government of West Germany, which had just been in office for a year, were proposing to resign, and Adenauer would form a new government. Following the resignation of five Liberal Democratic Party ministers, 15 ministers of the Christian Democratic Union-Christian Social Union also proposed to resign on the 20th. The direct cause of this government crisis was the recent row between the Christian Democratic Union-Christian Social Union and the Liberal Democratic Party, which participated in the Adenauer coalition government, over the Der Spiegel incident. In late October, the West German Federal Prosecutor General seized Der Spiegel on the grounds of leaking "national defense secrets" without prior notification to the Justice Minister, Liberal Democrat Stamberg. Afterwards, the Liberal Democrats pointed out that the matter was related to West German Defense Minister Strauss and asked Adenauer to remove Strauss. The Liberal Democrats wanted to kick Strauss out of the government in an attempt to increase their power in the coalition government. After Adenauer refused this request, the Liberal Democrats decided to resign the party's five ministers in the coalition government, and Stamberg submitted a resignation letter to Adenauer on behalf of the five ministers on the 20th. Liberal Democratic Party Chairman Monde held a press conference on this issue on the 20th and insisted on Strauss leaving the government. He also insisted that Adenauer resign as prime minister next fall in accordance with the July agreement between the two parties. Subsequently, the executive meeting of Adenauer's party Christian Democratic Union Parliamentary Group also held an emergency meeting on the 20th with Adenauer's participation. At the meeting, it was decided that its ministers in the government would also resign so that Adenauer could form the new government "unfettered".
