On this day, 80 years ago, April 28, 1945 (March 17, 1945 in the lunar calendar), the New Fourth Army won a great victory in Funing. In April 1945, the Third Division of the New Fourth Army gathered 11 regiments and more than 14,000 people to launch the Battle of Funing while the Japanese army was withdrawing southward from Yancheng and Funing and the 41st Division of the Fifth Army of the Puppet Second Front Army were busy handing over defense. At midnight on the 24th, the 8th Brigade and the 10th Brigade launched fierce attacks on the northern position of Funing respectively, and wiped out the defending enemy by noon on the 25th. At the same time, they ambushed the two main regiments of the puppet army from the Da and Xiao Guzhuang rescued by Funing City, and took advantage of the victory in pursuit, occupying the artillery towers in the north of the city and the strongholds inside the moat. In the afternoon of that day, the main three regiments were concentrated and quickly engaged in street fighting. On the morning of the 26th, one enemy unit was wiped out and most of the enemy surrendered. The remnants of the enemy who fled south at night were also intercepted by the troops acting as the shadow attack and one of them was wiped out. Subsequently, the New Fourth Army took advantage of the victory and expanded its results. On April 28, it recovered Dashizhuang, Gouandun, Caoyankou and other strongholds along the Yancheng Funing Highway. So far, the three-day Battle of Funing was won.
