On this day, 90 years ago, on February 10, 1935 (January 7, 1935 in the lunar calendar), archaeologists discovered the oldest known city. On February 10, 1935, the University of Pennsylvania Museum announced that archaeologists had discovered the remains of the oldest known city while excavating the Depigora mound in northern Mesopotamia. This site dates back about 5700 years. The city is the 11th discovery between Baghdad and the Persian Gulf. The systematic survey of the stretch from Baghdad to the Persian Gulf was led by Charles Becch. The parts dug up by archaeologists included the walls and personal quarters of a temple, household pottery, knives and grindstones, as well as containers for women's cosmetics, spindles, clothes woven from cloth and other utensils. At the same time, some tombs with wooden coffins were also found with bodies inside, and the precious objects buried with them were all left intact. The newly discovered city dates back to 3750 BC and is at least older than the earliest known Chaldean culture. Archaeologists say they hope to discover even older sites. They are continuing to dig the mound. The last people lived here in 1500 BC. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/1z48.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.16-00:41] 访问:72
