Wu Han was born in 1909 in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province. His original name was Chun Han, also known as Chen Bo. After graduating from Tsinghua University in 1934, he stayed on to teach. After the July 7th Incident, he went to Yunnan and successively served as a professor at Yunnan University and Southwest Associated University. Joined the China Democratic League in 1943. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he returned to Peiping to serve as a professor at Tsinghua University and actively engaged in the democratic movement. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served successively as the chairman of the History Department of Tsinghua University. Member of the Cultural and Educational Committee of the Central People's Government, Vice Mayor of Beijing City, Vice Chairman of the Beijing City CPPCC, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic League, Member of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the China Academy of Sciences, President of the Beijing City Historical Society, Representative to the National People's Congress, and Member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He is the author of "Reading History Notes", punctuated by "Zizhi Tongjian" and "Xu Zizhi Tongjian". Wu Han's new historical drama "Hai Rui's Dismissal from Official" was attacked by Yao Wenyuan. After Mao Zedong's approval, a nationwide movement to criticize "Hai Rui's Dismissal from Official" was launched, and Wu Han was brutally persecuted.
