On March 11, 1811, French mathematician and astronomer Auburn Jean Joseph Le Vier was born
On this day, 214 years ago, March 11, 1811 (February 17, 1811, the 1811 lunar calendar), French mathematician and astronomer Auburn Jean Joseph Le Vier was born. Urbain Jean Joseph LeVerrier (March 11, 1811-September 23, 1877) was a French mathematician and astronomer. Neptune's orbit was calculated, and based on his calculations, German astronomer Galle at the Berlin Observatory observed Neptune. Le Vier speculated that the gravitational effect of an unknown planet disrupted Uranus's orbital motion, which is what is called "perturbation" in astronomy. He calculated the orbit, position, and size of the planet, and then asked Galle of the Berlin Observatory to find the unknown planet. On September 23, 1846, Galle discovered a new planet less than 1 degree from the position predicted by Levier in accordance with Levier's prediction in just an hour. The new planet was later named Neptune. The year Neptune was discovered, Le Vier was 35 years old. Comments: A great application of classical physics.
