Gregory XIII On April 10, 1585, Pope Gregory XIII passed away. Pope Gregory XIII (June 7, 1502-April 10, 1585) was an Italian Pope (reigned from 1572 to 1585). Originally known as Ugo Boncompagni. After taking office, he expressed his determination to implement the resolutions of the Trent Conference, set about rectifying the Catholic Church and promoting the Anti-Religious Reform Movement. He appointed some cardinals to form committees to review the misconduct of clergy and approve the "Catalog of Forbidden Books of the Holy See." Several colleges and seminaries were founded, including Gregorian University, and the management of these educational institutions was entrusted to the Jesuits. Later generations have often accused him of not supporting the Irish rebels in resisting the anti-Catholic actions of Queen Elizabeth I of England. On August 24, 1572, the massacre of St. Bartholomew occurred in Paris, killing a large number of Protestants. Afterwards, Gregory sang "Psalm" in Rome to celebrate, a move that was also condemned. In 1582, with the assistance of the Neapolitan astronomer and physicist Girardi and the Germanic mathematician Jesuit Clavy, he corrected the errors in the Julian calendar promulgated in 46 BC and promulgated the Gregorian calendar, which is the Gregorian calendar currently used in the world.
