On this day, 76 years ago, on October 14, 1949 (August 23, 1949, the People's Liberation Army of China liberated Guangzhou. On October 2, 1949, the Fourth Corps of the China People's Liberation Army, the 15th Corps of the Fourth Field Army and the Guangdong and Guangxi Column that marched into Guangdong used one force to attack south of Guangzhou along the Dongjiang River on the front line from Hengyang to Baoqing (i.e. Shaoyang) in Hunan, liberating both sides of the Dongjiang River and the Pearl River Delta area; the main force marched south along both sides of the Guangdong-Han Road, successively conquering Qujiang, Yingde and other cities, and annihilating more than 47,000 Kuomintang Bai Chongxi troops. On the 14th, Guangzhou was liberated. The enemy's main force fled southwest, and the Fourth Corps took advantage of the victory to pursue and surrounded and wiped out the fleeing enemy in Yangjiang, Yangchun and other places. The enemy in Chaozhou and Shantou fled by the sea. The battle ended on the 29th, wiping out more than 62,000 people from two Kuomintang regiments and other remnants.
