A military coup occurred in Sudan on April 6, 1985
On this day, 40 years ago, April 6, 1985 (February 17, 1985 in the lunar calendar), a military coup occurred in Sudan. On April 6, 1985, Sudanese Defense Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Dahab announced that the army had taken over power and dismissed Nimeiri as president. After the coup, the armed forces called Dahab to express their support, and the people took to the streets to cheer for the success of the coup. The trigger for this coup was large-scale anti-government demonstrations and strikes by the people. On March 28, when Nimeiri visited the United States, demonstrations began and clashes with the military government due to public dissatisfaction with the rising price of basic foods in the country. The wave of people's protests and demonstrations is rising one after another, and the situation across the country is becoming increasingly tense. Since April 3, another national general strike broke out one after another, with the number of strikers reaching about 20,000. Sudan was isolated from the outside world, air transportation, telephone and telecommunications connections were all interrupted, and calls against the government spread across the country. In view of the deteriorating situation, the military announced that it would take over power and "will remain in power for the time being." Observers believe that there are also profound political, economic and historical reasons for the coup in Sudan. In recent years, the Sudanese government has mismanaged, misplanned, and hastily implemented economic reforms, which have depressed the market, severely scarred gasoline, and strained the supply of other necessities of life. Recently, currency devaluation and price subsidies for bread, gasoline and other basic daily necessities have led to price increases and aroused strong dissatisfaction among the general public. Another important reason for economic deterioration is that Sudan has suffered from drought for four consecutive years, which has greatly reduced agricultural production. Currently, the number of people affected by the disaster has reached 1.75 million. The domestic policies implemented by Sudan in 1985 were also an important reason for the people to oppose the current government. In July 1983, Nimeiri divided the south into three regions in order to strengthen his rule over the south; in September Nimeiri announced the implementation of Islamic law across the country, banning the production and sale of alcohol and some recreational activities, which greatly deepened the ethnic, religious and linguistic differences and confrontation between the north and the south. The vast majority of the people in the south are Christians. These measures are generally regarded as discrimination by the government against the south, and anti-government armed activities in the south have developed accordingly.
