Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Guangning Gate Incident during the Wanli Period of the Ming Dynasty
In February 1607 (the first month of the 35th year of Wanli of the Ming Dynasty), Long Tang, the magistrate of Taixing County, went to Beijing to participate in the "Grand Plan"(foreign officials came to Beijing to accept the emperor's assessment). Due to poor results in the examination, he was demoted. He was depressed and unhappy. He left Beijing with illness. When he reached Guangning Gate, he met tax supervisors Zhao Lu, Wang Tai, Zhang Xian, Xing Xiang and others collecting taxes in Carmen. Seeing Long Tang arriving, he mistakenly thought that this demoted official had a lot of money to gain, so he extorted him. Unexpectedly, Long Tang's empty luggage could not satisfy the greed of the tax supervisors. At first, he only insulted and cursed him, then kicked and kicked him, and also used a lethal weapon. Long Tang was beaten until his head fell out, blood spurted out from his mouth, and he passed out. Afterwards, the masses launched an attack and jointly wrote a petition. The Ministry of War requested the emperor to strictly punish these illegal tax supervisors in accordance with the law. Due to public outrage, the Ming Shenzong delayed for seven or eight days before putting the perpetrator into prison. The Ministry of Civil Affairs found out that Long Tang's fatal blow came from Zhao Lu. After consultation with the Department of Justice and Law, Zhao Biao was executed on February 18 (the 22nd of the first month), and Xing and the three of them were exiled to the border guards.
