June 1, 1859, American philosopher Dewey's birthday
166 years ago today, June 1, 1859 (May 1, 1859 in the lunar calendar) was the birthday of the American philosopher Dewey. Dewey, born on June 1, 1859, is an American idealist philosopher and founder of the "Chicago School" of pragmatism. He died of pneumonia on June 1, 1952 at the age of 92. Dewey firmly believed that "practice is the best learning" and followed this credo throughout his life. He reformed school systems in Chicago and New York, helped create the New School of Social Studies, and assisted with the Civil Liberties Union in its work. Dewey was born into a nice family in Vermont. He attended Vermont State University and Johns Hopkins University, and later taught at Michigan State University and other prestigious schools. In 1899, he published the book "Schools and Society", vigorously advocating practical education. After conducting field surveys in China, Japan and the Soviet Union, he even appreciated learning combined with labor. His book Experience and Nature (1925) elaborated on his pragmatic philosophy.
