DeGrasse Hyde

Graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1884, participated in the Irish National Liberation Movement early, and served as chairman of the Gaelic League from 1893 to 1915, fighting to maintain the Irish language's equal legal status with English. Professor of Modern Irish at University College Dublin from 1909 to 1932. He served briefly as a member of the House of Lords of the Free State of Ireland. From 1938 to 1945, he was elected the first president of the Irish Free State, at the age of 78.

He is the author of "Connaught's Love Song"(1893),"A History of Irish Literature"(1899),"The Poems of Rafftree"(1904),"Irish Folk Legend of Saints and Sinners", etc.
