Thirty years ago today, on December 20, 1995 (October 29, 1995 in the lunar calendar), my country's first suspension bridge Bay Bridge was completed. Shantou Bay Bridge On December 20, 1995, my country's first modern large-scale suspension bridge, the Bay Bridge, laid the foundation by General Secretary Jiang Zemin and constructed by the Third Department of the Bridge Bureau of the Ministry of Railways, was completed in Shantou. The Bay Bridge is located in the sea area of Majin Island at the eastern entrance and exit of Shantou Port in the Shantou Special Economic Zone. It connects the Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway in the south and the Shanfan-Fen Expressway in the north. It consists of a suspension bridge and a north-south approach bridge. It has a total length of 2500 meters, of which the main span of the suspension bridge is 452 meters. The suspended stiffening beam is a prestressed concrete box beam, which is more than 200 meters longer than the Hudson Hope Bridge in Canada, making it the highest span of bridges of its type in the world today. The bridge has a clear width of 24.2 meters and a height of 50.3 meters. It can pass 50,000-ton seagoing vessels.
