The first Taiwan Strait crisis on October 24, 1949
On this day, 76 years ago, October 24, 1949 (September 3, 1949 in the lunar calendar), the first Taiwan Strait crisis occurred: the Battle of Kinmen. The civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party broke out in 1946, and the Kuomintang regime retreated to Taiwan in 1949, which turned into a military confrontation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. This military confrontation has lasted for more than 60 years and has not yet ended, but the intensity of the military confrontation varies in different periods. Changes in the intensity of cross-Strait military confrontation are affected by changes in the cross-Strait political situation, and of course, by international factors. The first Taiwan Strait Crisis: Battle of Kinmen (October 24, 1949-August 1950) After the People's Liberation Army launched the Battle of Crossing the Yangtze River (Yangtze River) in April 1949, it occupied most of the area south of the Yangtze River within a few months. The Nanjing National Government had to retreat from the mainland to Taiwan. In August of the same year, the People's Liberation Army captured Fujian and occupied Hunan and Gansu. In September, the People's Liberation Army captured Suiyuan and Xinjiang. Successive victories in the war have accelerated the pace of establishing political power by the Communist Party of China. On October 1 of the same year, the Communist Party of China announced the establishment of the government of the People's Republic of China in Beijing. After the founding of the People's Republic, the Communist Party of China planned to liberate coastal islands including Taiwan Island and Fujian Province. In early October 1949, while liberating the Southwest, the People's Liberation Army decided to liberate Kinmen and Xiamen. On October 15, the 10th Corps of the Third Field Army of the China People's Liberation Army attacked Gulangyu for the first time. However, this was just a feint attack. The Kuomintang troops occupying Xiamen Island did not notice it and dispatched reserve troops to Gulangyu to besiege our army's vanguard landing troops. Although the troops landing on Gulangyu suffered heavy casualties, the main force of the People's Liberation Army defeated the Kuomintang army on Xiamen Island, and both Xiamen Island and Gulangyu were captured by our army. This battle was "a successful sea-crossing landing operation in the War of Liberation." On the evening of October 24, seven days after the liberation of Xiamen Island, nearly 10,000 people from the 28th Army and 29th Army of the 10th Corps of the People's Liberation Army launched a campaign to attack Kinmen Island and captured the Guningtou position in Kinmen at 2:30 on the 25th. However, due to the inability of subsequent troops to keep up and the rapid reinforcement of the Kuomintang troops, at 7 p.m. on the 26th, most of the People's Liberation Army that landed were killed and some were captured. The People's Liberation Army was severely defeated in this battle. The defeat of the Battle of Kinmen did not stop the People's Liberation Army's determination to liberate the coastal islands. On December 31, 1949, the Communist Party issued the "Letter to Soldiers on the Front Line and Compatriots across the Country", proposing the combat mission for 1950:"Liberating Taiwan, Hainan Island and Xizang." In order to weaken the overall strength of the Kuomintang army, the People's Liberation Army also launched military operations against the Zhoushan Islands, Hainan Island, and Wanshan Islands, and liberated Hainan Island, the main islands of the Zhoushan Islands and all the islands of the Wanshan Islands. In April 1950, the Communist Party once again proposed that "liberating Taiwan is the most important combat task of the whole party." Then, the East China Military Region and the Front Committee of the Third Field Army issued the "Instructions on Preparations for Attaching Taiwan." Liberating Taiwan has become a top priority for New China. In order to attack Taiwan, the People's Liberation Army successively formed naval and air force units. At that time, an elite force of 150,000 people was assembled on the Fujian front line. In addition to training for intensive amphibious attacks, a large number of landing ships and other types of ships were prepared in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Shantou and other ports, as well as hundreds of aircraft and about 30 air force bases. In June, Chairman Mao Zedong appointed Su Yu to be responsible for organizing the Battle of Taiwan. In July, the People's Liberation Army conducted reconnaissance of Taiwan and decided to launch an attack on Taiwan in August. At this time, the international community also generally believed that the People's Liberation Army would launch a military offensive against Taiwan before the typhoon season. For a moment, the clouds of war gathered in the Taiwan Strait, and the atmosphere on the island of Taiwan was full of tension. However, just as war in the Taiwan Strait was imminent and the Taiwan Island was in danger, the Korean War broke out, the main forces of the People's Liberation Army were engaged in the war to "Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea", and at the same time, the U.S. Seventh Fleet entered the Taiwan Strait, and the plan to liberate Taiwan was shelved.
