91 years ago today, July 25, 1934 (June 14, 1934 in the lunar calendar), Austrian Nazis assassinated Prime Minister Taolfis. Germany annexed Austria. Adolf Hitler, Austria's new master, was warmly welcomed in Vienna. On the evening of July 25, 1934, Austrian President Erbert Taolfis was assassinated by Nazi insurgents in Vienna. They shot him in his office, and he fell to the floor, curled into a ball, bleeding to death for four hours. The rebels held cabinet members hostage in an attempt to negotiate their freedom. They did not allow doctors to resuscitate the prime minister. At 9 o'clock tonight, officials relented. They allowed the rioters to leave the building on condition of releasing cabinet members. They were arrested again after news of Taorpheus's death broke. When citizens attempted to lynch the assassins, the Austrian government declared martial law. Kurt Shusniger succeeded as Prime Minister. Dorfus was born on October 4, 1892. He participated in the First World War and was awarded the rank of second lieutenant. He joined the Austrian Christian Socialist Party in 1921. In 1931, he served as Minister of Rural Affairs and in 1932, he served as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the First Republic. During his tenure, he banned the Communist Party and the Austrian Nazi Party, suppressed mass movements, and established a dictatorship. Externally committed to the military alliance of Italy, Austria and Hungary, and opposed Germany's annexation of Austria.
